Summary
A regular customer in Islington contacted us to arrange a boiler service for their Vaillant boiler, which was over 10 years old and had not been serviced for more than two years.
Due to the age of the appliance and the gap between services, we expected to find signs of wear, potential leaks, combustion issues, or maintenance items requiring attention. Our goal was to carry out a thorough inspection and service to ensure the boiler remained safe and efficient ahead of the colder months.
The Challenge
Older boilers can often develop issues when regular servicing has been missed. Common things we find include:
- Dirty condensate traps
- Deteriorating seals
- Blocked components
- Minor water leaks
- Combustion readings that require adjustment
As this boiler had not been serviced for over two years, we anticipated that maintenance work might be required to restore the appliance to optimal conditions.
It was important to carry out a full safety inspection, including checks of the flue system and combustion performance to ensure the boiler was operating safely and efficiently.
Our Solution
Our Gas Safe engineer carried out a comprehensive boiler service and inspection.
Initial testing confirmed that the boilers gas pressures and combustion readings were within the manufacturers recommended parameters. The appliance was operating efficiently and producing satisfactory performance for its age.
A detailed internal inspection revealed no signs of water leaks, component failures, or excessive wear. The flue system was also checked to ensure it was correctly sealed preventing any products of combustion from entering the property.
The main maintenance item identified during the service was the condensate trap seen in the image below. As the boiler had not been serviced for more than two years, the trap contained a build up of debris and required cleaning.
The condensate trap was removed, thoroughly cleaned, and reinstated. This is an important part of a boiler service that can sometimes be overlooked, but regular cleaning helps prevent future blockages and unnecessary boiler breakdowns.
Following completion of the service, all safety checks were repeated and the boiler was confirmed to be operating correctly.
The Result
The boiler was found to be in good overall condition despite its age and the gap between services.
By carrying out a thorough inspection of the interior and cleaning the condensate trap, we were able to reduce the risk of future condensate related faults while confirming that the appliance remained safe and efficient to operate.
The customer now has peace of mind that their boiler has been professionally serviced and inspected with no signs of gas leaks, water leaks, combustion issues, or flue safety concerns.
We recommended that all boilers be serviced every 12 months to maintain their reliability, maximise its lifespan and identify any maintenance requirements before they develop into more costly repairs.
