What Is an Emergency Lighting Certificate?
An Emergency Lighting Certificate confirms that your emergency lighting system has been tested, inspected, and meets the legal standards for safety. Emergency lighting is required to automatically illuminate exit routes in the event of a power failure — helping occupants evacuate the building safely.
Following an inspection, a certificate is issued to confirm compliance with relevant regulations, including BS 5266-1:2016, the British Standard for emergency lighting systems.
Why Emergency Lighting is needed?
Emergency lights are crucial safety feature of commercial buildings. Typically, emergency lights are used to show the exit routes enabling people to leave the building safely in the event of an emergency.
Emergency lighting is necessary as the system will still work if there is a loss of power or in the case of a fire. If emergency lights aren’t working properly a bad situation could be made worse, especially in the event of a power failure.
If you are managing a commercial or public building whether it is a school cinema or office it is your legal responsibility to make sure all emergency lighting are in working condition. Regular testing keeps everyone safe and ensures you stay compliant. Neglecting this responsibility could lead to serious consequences including prosecution. Avoid the risk by testing your emergency lights and stay protected.
