Why Should You Replace Your Old Fuse Box?
There are a ton of properties across London that had their fuse boxes installed decades ago, during a time when households used far less electrical devices, so these fuse boxes are now outdated and can’t handle the electrical strain of today’s modern living standards.
Old systems with outdated wiring can be a potential hazard and can cause serious electrical damage, so it’s always a good idea to keep your fuse boxes checked and up to date.
Updating your old systems give you:
- A system that will instantly cut power in the case of an electrical shock or fault.
- Provide comprehensive circuit protection for safety.
- Protection again power surges and lightning strikes that could cause damage to your appliances.
Updating your old fuse boxes doesn’t just ensure safety, but also keeps you in line with the legal standards for all electrical installations in the UK.
What Happens During Your Fuse Box Replacement?
When you choose us for the job, we’ll make sure everything is safe, tidy and compliant:
- Initial safety check – we will first check your current system to identify and issues before we start working.
- Isolating power – we’ll make sure your power supply is turned off before installing the new system.
- We’ll remove the old fuse box – we’ll safely disconnect the old one and remove it.
- Installing the new unit – we’ll go ahead and install the new fuse box with RCD, RCBO and SPD protection.
- Testing the circuit – all installations will then be tested.
- Certification – when we’ve finished installing and testing, we will issue a full Electrical Installation Certificate for you to keep for your records.
Once we’re done, we’ll tidy up and leave you with a safe and compliant system with everything functioning properly.
What Are the Benefits of Upgrading Your Fuse Box?
Updating an old fuse box is an investment in your property’s future and safety, as it can keep all your appliances safe from damage, as well as being a legal formality in some cases.
A modern unit can provide:
- Improved electrical safety with the latest technology for circuit protection.
- A reduced risk of fault or shock should anything go wrong.
- Keeping your insurance policies valid in case of any potential damage.
- A much easier way to identify faults in the future.
- Peace of mind knowing your premises and electrical appliances are safe and secure.
Future-proofing Your Electrical System
Every five years, it’s a good idea to have your electrical systems inspected with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), especially if you’re a landlord or property owner.
Regular testing can help keep your circuits safe by testing for potential wear and damages that could affect your appliances. And that’s where we come in.
If your lighting trip frequently, fuses blow without any warning, and there is visible wear and tear, then we recommend you call us in. Our qualified electricians can help you understand what the issue is and walk you through your options. We give free, no obligation estimates, usually on the same day as inspection.
Understanding Your Electrical Load
Many homes have old fuse boxes that were originally designed to carry less electrical power throughout the premises.
With the addition of electrical showers, car chargers, and many smart home features, old fuse boxes are under way more pressure than ever before. When you have a modern consumer unit, the updated system will distribute power across your home more efficiently and safely. Our engineers will always check the load to make sure it isn’t under any strain from your appliances.
What’s the Difference Between a Fuse Box and a Consumer Unit?
The traditional fuse box has now been replaced by a consumer unit which can handle a much heavier flow of electricity. With a traditional fuse box, wires would typically melt away when there was a fault, whereas the consumer unit will use circuit breakers that can be reset with a simple switch.
